Da tempo il bitcoin si è posto al centro dell'interesse mediatico con i numerosi record di quella che, ormai, è la criptovaluta più conosciuta dal grande pubblico, ma occorre fare molta attenzione perché non tutte le voci sono disinteressate. Iniziano, infatti, ad apparire i primi speculatori che vedono in questo nuovo mezzo di pagamento solo un'occasione di facili e rapidi guadagni, a discapito della stabilità del sistema e degli altri utenti.

Dopo una breve premessa per inquadrare il contesto e fornire alcuni dati di partenza, questo libro analizza gli aspetti più rilevanti delle varie criptovalute e i possibili sviluppi pratici legati all'applicazione della blockchain al fine di fornire una guida, di facile e rapida consultazione, che consenta agli utenti di agire con la necessaria cautela, diffidando di coloro che promettono rapidi e immediati guadagni e, soprattutto, lasciando da parte i rumors su un possibile crollo (o aumento) vertiginoso del valore del bitcoin: il rischio è quello che si inneschino meccanismi speculativi volti a "pilotare" il mercato attraverso la diffusione di notizie e informazioni non attendibili.

Il volume mette in evidenza anche un elemento che al grande pubblico sembra essere sfuggito: l'aspetto più importante della "rivoluzione bitcoin" non è rappresentato tanto dalla moneta in sé, ma dalla possibilità di applicare la blockchain ai più svariati ambiti, non ultimo quello contrattuale (smart contract) con conseguenze pratiche che, a oggi, è difficile immaginare.

Emanuele Florindi, avvocato, si occupa prevalentemente di diritto dell'informatica, bioetica e tutela dei minori. Segretario AISF (Accademia Internazionale di Scienze Forensi) e membro del CSIG di Perugia (Centro Studi Informatica Giuridica) tiene frequentemente, in qualità di relatore o docente, corsi e seminari in tema di criminalità informatica, computer forensics e tutela dei minori in rete. è stato membro del Comitato di Garanzia Internet e Minori e ufficiale di complemento in Guardia di finanza. Sin dal 2000 collabora attivamente, in qualità di consulente, con numerose procure della Repubblica, coadiuvando gli inquirenti nel corso di indagini inerenti a reati di criminalità informatica. Autore di varie pubblicazioni in materia, è professore a contratto di Diritto dell'informatica presso il corso di laurea in Informatica e di Informatica forense presso il corso di Laurea in Scienze per l'investigazione e la sicurezza. My review: 4/5My perception of cryptocurrencies? An old banking perspective, as I posted within something I wrote on Linkedin in 2014 after a workshop on SDR Bancor etc: a currency represents at least a store of a (fractional value)- "fiat money" yes, but backed by a reliable partner; instead, Bitcoin for me is akin to tulips few centuries ago- but without even the physical element.

This is not anyway the reason why I bought and read this book.

Instead, from an European Union citizen perspective, there are two other elements that are much more interesting:
1. the discussion of how Ethereum allows to implement "smart contracts" (search Wikipedia if you need)
2. a long list of cases discussing the tax and regulatory side of cryptocurrencies.

From a social and business perspective, the blockchain and smart contract technologies actually are much more interesting, as currently we are talking abot removing intermediaries in anything from financial services to applying a value to data exchanges (e.g. for IoT).

And none of the "potential virtualization of intermediaries" is feasible without a trust-building channel, something that can be delivered by the technologies discussed within this book.

As witnessed as recently as yesterday during the annual conference of the Governor of the Bank of Italy, there are still wide gaps within the regulatory framework, and nonetheless a key element has been identified: nation states are ill equipped to individually regulate this market, and also within this book you will find convoluted cases discussed in courts of EU Member States as well as at the EU level.

This book can be a useful introduction also for non-technical or non-legal business people interested in understanding the key concepts and potential business opportunities- easy to read, you can just skip the more "technical" (meaning: ICT and legal and tax) sections, and still get value out of this short book.
