Le sei eroine raccontate da Gabriella Greison non sono certo le sole donne della scienza, ma sono quelle che forse hanno aperto la strada alle altre, con la loro volontà, la loro abilità, il talento e la protervia, in un mondo apertamente ostile, fatto di soli uomini.

Sono quelle che hanno dato alla scienza e a tutti noi i risultati eclatanti delle loro ricerche e insieme la consapevolezza che era possibile - era necessario - dare accesso alle donne all'impresa scientifica.

Non averlo fatto per così tanto tempo è un delitto che è stato pagato a caro prezzo dalla società umana.

Sono sei storie magnifiche.

Non sempre sono storie allegre e non sempre sono a lieto fine, perché sono racconti veri, di successi e di fallimenti.

Ma è grazie a queste icone della scienza novecentesca e al loro esempio che abbiamo avuto poi altre donne, che hanno fatto un po' meno fatica a farsi largo e ci hanno regalato i frutti del loro sapere e della loro immaginazione.

Dietro di loro sempre più donne si appassionano alla scienza, e un domani, in numero sempre maggiore, saranno libere di regalarci il frutto delle loro brillanti intelligenze.

In Italian we have a saying ""behind every great man, there is a great woman"" often this is meant in a dismissive, maschilist way- i.e. as somebody taking care of what leaves the ""great man"" to focus on what makes him great

But in this book you will find something more appropriate- partnerships, not ""morally indentured serviture"" and also a perception of how times changed- and how, to bring about those changes, the first ones had to bring down walls built of prejudices and ignorance

Obviously a book that chooses six examples has to build a narrative around those six that is selective and potentially biased: but I remember nobody complaining about ""selective bias"" when in school we were taught about the counterparts of some of these scientist- without even bothering to name any of the six (I remember just a footnote on Einstein's wife, from school)

But it does, and did not, apply just to physics, and as far as I remember well past the 1950s: also at the university, in the 1980s, I remember how some works from famous professors in computer science were told to have been actually the work of their (female) assistants

Anyway, the main value of the book is to read of all the roadblocks that had to be overcome, and then, after thinking ""this was the past"", get inspired to observe again

As usual: I remember a joke from a professor I met in the USA- born in Africa, he was told that, when he delivered a lecture in Italy in the private sector, he should say that he was from the USA, not from Africa, as we Italians would not take him seriously otherwise: and I am talking of the early 1990s as always: the lessons from the past should serve as a guideline to avoid repeating the same mistakes in a different context it might not be anymore sex but race, color of skin, religion, nationality, but did we really overcome the bias that wasted so many resources in the past?

And not just in Italy (albeit in these cases, as I am an Italian, I prefer to say that ""we"" Italians have to think about overcoming those habits: it is too easy to lecture other countries)
