Ed è diventato senso comune con la Seconda Repubblica: il restyling dei nomi e dei simboli, i modernizzatori contro i conservatori, gli innovatori contro i nostalgici.

Nuovo si è presentato il Cavaliere dell'eterno presente.

Nuovi i tecnici come Mario Monti. Nuovissimi i cittadini scelti dalla Rete nel Movimento 5 Stelle.

E ancor più nuovo il renzismo della rottamazione dove tutto doveva apparire mai visto, mai udito, senza precedenti.

Il Nuovo è stato la via italiana al governo e alla politica.

Ora sembra smarrito, per incapacità di elaborazione, fragilità culturale, inconsistenza progettuale. Ma nessuna restaurazione del passato è possibile.

E l'Italia ha bisogno di una nuova politica, per uscire da questo limbo senza riforme e senza partiti, senza destra e senza sinistra, senza vecchio e senza nuovo.

Serve un Nuovo che sia ricostruzione, rigenerazione.

My review: 3.5/5I do not necessarily agree with all the points presented by the author (a journalist from ""L'Espresso""), but it is a quick read (more breadth that depth) on the various attempts to ""renew"" the contract between Italian citizens and representative politics

Interestingly, it is focused more on the evolution of traditional political parties (from Craxi, to Berlusconi, to Prodi, to Monti, to Renzi) than on the various ""alternative political structures"", i.e. Partito Radicale, Northern League, and the more recent Cinquestelle (to say nothing about the extreme right entities such as Forza Nuova or Casa Pound)

What is the point: I could summarize paraphrasing a famous quote from an even more famous book: all the ""new"" in Italian politics is new only when it tries to get into office- then, it is older than what it was supposed to replace

As the typical Italian issue is that nobody really trusts long term anybody that (s)he does not know, and therefore most ""new"" turns from a mission (""updating"" the Italian State and society) to settling- we had plenty of people ""on loan"" from society to politics since the 1980s, and, interestingly, all are still there as recurring names influencing or even occupying parts of the State

And, to avoid any surprise, usually the ""new"" uses the opportunities offered by the unusual Italian ""spoils system"" to occupy every nook and cranny with ""clientes"" and cronies- so that, if they stay one-two years in office, are able to actually leave behind ""fifth columnists""

That, of course, once their sponsor fades, find another sponsor- or become they themselves a ""leader""

So, I concur with most of the last few pages of the author- and his ""selected bibliography"" shares some books worth reading (e.g. see the review that I posted on Calise ""La democrazia del leader"" https://www.librarything.com/work/17795349/book/130286238), as they do represent quite well the risks that our representative democracies run to become a Trojan horse for something else
